Jesus, Mocking Music Loves You Too

Geoff Trainor

It has been a while since I've done a post, mostly due to the fact that I spent most of my free time last week on the site re-design. I figured I'd make it up to you all with a new themed list. On that certain day last month someone sent out a little Valentine to show his love for well, everyone. I thought it was time for us to repay the gesture. This week's themed list is dedicated to the one, the only, Jesus.

It was hard going through all the Jesus related material. Seems Jesus is a popular word in Christian music. I know, thought it was strange too. It sure would have quickened the process to be an omnipotent being.

20) This Is My Fist! - Jesus Plus Nothing (MP3)
I know punk generally consists of short songs, but this song could definitely have made the cut for Short Songs For Short People clocking in a 40 seconds on the dot. Any punk that involves a female vocalist is alright with me.

19) Guster - Jesus On The Radio (MP3)
As I do with all the bands when I add them to the list, I checked out Guster's website while listening to this song. It was quite pretty, and so is this song.

18) Mogwai - You Don't Know Jesus (MP3)
I think Mogwai must be confused. I do know Jesus, as he occasionally comments on our blog. Well Mogwai, as un-informed as you may be, you managed to put together a solid track. Has sort of a spooky atmosphere to it.

17) Mad Capsule Markets - Jesus Is Dead (MP3)
I remember listening to this band is Casey's car in high school. That is my only experience with them, but this song is great. I can't understand a word being said, but I still quite enjoy it.

16) Cake - Jesus Wrote A Blank Check (MP3)
Who doesn't enjoy Cake? Especially the DQ ice cream variety...oh right, the band Cake. This song, like all Cake songs, is very catchy. I think this may be the only song on the list with horns, that makes it special. Not Less Than Jake special though.

15) Bearsuit - Cookie Oh Jesus (MP3)
Indie Pop at its best. This song is incredibly catchy, almost to the point of irritation. This is definitely one of the songs that stays in my head the longest. Good song for sure, but I couldn't listen to it too much.

14)
Sebadoh - Jealous of Jesus (MP3)
I think this is the best description of the relationship between Casey and Jesus. He hides it well, but there is a slight feeling of jealousy of Casey's part. Apart from Casey's emotional distress, this is an amusing song.

13) Kanye West - Jesus Walks (MP3)
I'm really not a Kanye West fan, but I do enjoy this song. I think it is more for the background choir chanting Jesus Walks and the Bom Bom Bom guys. It may help that I have never seen the video for this...they (Kanye West videos) tend to be, um, bad.

12) The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus (MP3)
I must make sure to say something nice about the Flaming Lips this time, I was overly negative in my previous list. The fact that they've made it on two of my very exclusive lists should be praise enough. As far as this particular song goes, I do enjoy it quite a bit. Still not likely to buy the CD anytime soon.

11) Iron & Wine - Jesus The Mexican Boy (MP3)
This is probably the least memorable track on the list. With that said, I do like it quite a bit. Definitely a nice song to listen to late at night when you are working at your PC writing up some gobblygook expert commentary on a track for a post.

10) Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus (MP3) (Original)
Oddly I prefer Cash his when he is covering other people's music and I quite often enjoy his covers to the originals. This Depeche Mode cover is no exception. Although A Boy Named Sue is a pretty awesome song.

9) Tenacious D - Jesus Ranch (MP3)
As soon as I found out there was a Jesus song by Tenacious D I had to find it Which I apparently already did over a year ago; it was already on my computer. Beyond the fact that Jack Black has some pretty amusing lyrics, he does have a great singing voice and it is matched well with his musical partner Kyle Gass.

8) Clem Snide - Jews For Jesus Blues (MP3)
Clem Snide will forever be associated with Christina Aguilera for me, since I heard his cover of Beautiful. Much like the Ramones will always be associated with Offspring for their cover of Offspring's hit, I Wanna Be Sedated. Still, this song reaches the top ten easily.

7) Bad Religion - American Jesus (MP3)
I don't know, I just can't dislike Bad Religion. This song is kind of what started this list...I mean besides the whole showing my love for Jesus thing. Someday I'll do a list and decide to keep Bad Religion off, but this is not that day.

6) Wilco - Jesus, Etc (MP3)
This song was neck and neck with next song on the list. It was really hard to make the decision on which I liked more, but eventually the guy's voice in the number 5 track was what won me over. Still, this Wilco track is great, fantastic even.

5) Jeff Tweedy - Whistling Jesus (MP3)
I know what your thinking. Casey comes off like an ass most of the time. No? Not what your thinking? If not that, it must be that we've already heard Tweedy in full Wilco mode. This is true, but c'mon! Good old fashioned whistling, everyone enjoys that. [Oh, not nice - and to think, I had to download an entire concert torrent in flac format to get that song. Tweedy claimed it was for the upcoming Loose Fur album, but it now seems it didn't make the cut. Sorry Jesus. - Casey]

4) Modest Mouse - Jesus Was An Only Child (MP3)
I don't believe it. I saw Dogma, and it filled me in on the truth. Modest Mouse, like Flaming Lips, is an artist I like, but could never completely get into them. I also got sick of hearing Float On everytime I went to Subway after weekly soccer games, despite it being a good song. Other than that, this song is fun, I highly recommend it.

3)
Supergrass - Jesus Came From Outer Space (MP3)
Another band that has been absent from my music listening for far too long. I have a slightly better excuse for this one, as I don't actually own any Supergrass albums. I really should, I know...but I don't.

2) Tori Amos - Mrs. Jesus (MP3)
It seems I never listen to go old Tori anymore. Usually, if I was in the mood I would stick in Emm Gryner (influence from Casey) or Fiona Apple. I'm glad I came across this song in my searches. For some reason I can't help but think of Amos cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit anytime I listening to her. Nirvana? Covers? That brings me to...

1) Nirvana - Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam (MP3) (Original)
Last time I mentioned Jesus and Nirvana together, they were locked in a vault together. This is one of those songs that I neglected to think of when I started out this list (Unlike Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia, which I just plain neglected). Finding the Vaseline's original is what brought this one to mind.

This has been my hardest list yet. Even after I had all the songs chosen, it was near impossible to number them all. Don't feel bad if you really like the higher numbered ones, so do I. In the end though, it was worth it. Now everyone can share in our love for Jesus.

Great list, thanks. Much to download.

So many BAD songs out there with Jesus in the title...but these were surprising in their absence from your list, and thus also "missing" / worth checking out:

1. Jim White's If Jesus Drove a Motor Home.

2. Jesus Christ (With Signs Following), by The Gourds. You know the Gourds. They do that cover of Gin and Juice that was mislabelled as being by Phish.

3. Mindy Smith's Come to Jesus (though I suppose she's not your type).

Kudos for NOT including Jesus of Suburbia (Green Day), the recent fiasco that is Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama covering "Pictures of Jesus", and the Doobie Brothers.

Two of my old time favorite Jesus bands are MC 9000 Foot Jesus and Jesus Jones and my favorite Jesus song has got to be Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hot Rod".

Thanks for your additions and keep up the Lord's work. God Bless.

Alas, I know your distaste of Flaming Lips, but you did miss "Thank You Jack White (For The Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me)", which is truly the greatest thank you note ever commited to song.
