Share the Love: Indie Style

Jonathan Migneault

Ever wanted to have your own custom-made love song? Well now you can.

Corey Dargel, a brilliant young pop musician from Brooklyn, New York, has started a project where he will let anyone commission a three to four minute love song for that special person in their life.

Wait, it gets better. According to Dargel's website: "Your commissioned love song is composed, recorded and produced over a period of two to three months. You receive two CDs of the song performed by Corey as well as a version with just the accompaniment track (so you can sing the song yourself). Your commissioned song is added to a compilation entitled Other People's Love Songs to be released as an album in 2008."

And all this for a negotiated fee that averages to "less than the price of an iPod."

Over the last year New York's media elite in the arts community, including the New York Times and the Village Voice, have raved about Dargel. As I write this, he has joined Final Fantasy and Grizzly Bear on the European leg of their tour.

His similarities to the former are astounding. Both studied composition in university and subsequently went on to create brilliant pop songs that are more complex than they first appear. Both artists also share a quirky sense of humour and have tongue firmly planted in cheek throughout many of their songs. Finally, I was amazed at how similar Dargel's voice is to Owen Pallett's (i.e. Final Fantasy). It has a soothing flow to it that is quite unique in indie music where more raspy vocals tend to dominate.

Dargel doesn't play the violin however. Instead, he weaves his songs with simple electronic harmonies.

His first album, Less Famous Than You, was released in the UK earlier this month and should be available in North America shortly. It comes highly recommended.

Again, I can't think of a better gift for that special person in your life than to have Corey Dargel create a unique, and likely, beautiful love song just for them. Do yourself a favour and send Corey a line now. It will be the best decision you make this week.

I'd like to thank Carl Wilson for exposing me to Dargel's music through his blog.
